Part 3 Question 5

Question 5

Picture 1 : Based on the photos in part 2, this picture shows a skull of an adult. The dentition shows a third molar at quadrant 4. So, the victim's age would be at least 17 years old.

Picture 2 : A piece of broken jaw of an adult bearing the first, second and third mandibular molars is shown. We can safely assume that the tooth on the most right is a first molar because of the root bifurcation mesiodistally. Besides that, the three teeth also shows the characteristics of permanent molars. Moreover, pieces of jaw just found by Dr.Rudi may also belong to this victim.  This is because picture 1 and picture 3 showed complete jaws.

Picture 3 : A normal corpse takes about 1 year to decay. However, the father of Anya only filed a report for a missing child only four months ago.
The jaw showed presence of mixed dentition and the size of the jaw is also small.
Leading to a conclusion that it may be a child jaw of about 9 to 10 years old.

There are several factors that may speed up the rate of decomposition :

  1. In hot and low humidity environments, the corpse can be decomposed in one week.
  2. Gender can affect amount of tissue lost. Females : 1 pound of tissue a day. Males : 3 pounds of tissue a day.
  3. Exposure to air can speed up the decomposition of corpse.
  4. Insects can also speed up the rate of decomposition
  5. Soil acidity can speed up the process with increasing acidity levels.

We can then assume that picture 3 showed a rate of decomposition of about 4 to 5 months which matches the missing person report filed by the father.
